Fall Porch Update

Fall is here! It's time to bring out the mums, take a trip to the pumpkin patch, and most importantly, decorate for the season. As the air gets crisp and the leaves start falling, it's the perfect time to give your front porch a much needed fall update and bring your curb appeal to the next level. Follow these tips and tricks to get started!

Step 1: Clean and Prepare

Before you begin decorating, make sure your porch is clean and in good condition. Sweep away any dirt and debris and consider giving it a good scrub if needed. Check for any repairs that may be necessary, such as loose boards or peeling paint, and fix them as needed.

Step 2: Choose a Color Scheme

Select a color scheme that complements the fall season. Typical fall colors include warm shades of orange, red, yellow, burgundy, and brown. You can also incorporate neutrals like white, beige, black, or gray to balance the palette and help soften the warmer tones.

Step 3: Add Natural Elements

Potted mums, pumpkins, and gourds are excellent choices for fall porch decor. Place them in colorful pots or rustic crates (TIP: Want to add a statement, while still keeping that rustic look? Take a plain white pot and add textured spray paint before putting in your mums or other fall plants). You can also consider adding ornamental grasses, hay bales, or cornstalks for added texture. A fall wreath is also a great focal point for your porch. You can buy one pre-made or make your own with items like faux fall leaves, pinecones, and berries. Hang it on your front door to welcome guests.

Step 4: Incorporate Lighting

As the days get shorter, consider adding some cozy lighting to your porch. String lights, lanterns, or even LED candles can create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Be sure to choose weather-resistant options if your porch is exposed to the elements.

Step 5: Make It Cozy

Add softness and comfort to your porch by incorporating textiles. Consider outdoor pillows and throws in your chosen color scheme. Plaid or checkered patterns can also give your porch a cozy, fall feel.

Now is also the time to add smaller decor items that scream "fall." Some ideas include:

  • A welcome mat with a design or message (TIP: If you have an old, weathered mat, use painter’s tape and spray paint to give it a quick and easy refresh.)

  • Scarecrows, hay bales, or decorative wooden signs.

  • A pumpkin or gourd garland. Add other elements like pinecones and leaves to elevate the overall look.

  • Personalized elements. Create a sign with your family name, house number, or a fall-themed quote. This adds a warm and inviting touch to your porch decor.

  • Wicker or wooden furniture with cushions in your chosen warm fall colors.

Step 6: Maintain and Refresh

As the season progresses, make sure to maintain your fall porch decor. Water your plants as needed and replace any decorations that have been weathered or damaged. Consider updating your porch for Halloween and Thanksgiving as those holidays approach.

By following these steps, you can transform your front porch into a welcoming and festive space for the fall season. Enjoy the cozy atmosphere and the admiration of your neighbors and guests!
