Step 1: Assess How Much Space You Have
Determine how much room you have to work with and if you’re willing to sacrifice space from any surrounding rooms or the budget to knock down walls. Now is the time to figure out the specifics of the exact size of your new kitchen.
-
Step 2. Determine What’s Not Working
Take a look at your current day-to-day life and routine in the kitchen and determine what’s not working for you. Consider items like storage space, flexibility to adjust shelving, pantry storage, where space is used efficiently and where there might be room for improvement.
-
Step 3: Needs
Create a list of your kitchen needs. Determine what you require to feel organized and efficient in this important space. For example, adjustable cabinet shelves, more storage for large items, lighting improvements and more seating for those maritime kitchen party guests.
-
Step 4: Make a Reno Plan
Once you’ve got an idea of the space size and your must have’s, the time is right to have a discussion with a kitchen designer. In addition to the kitchen’s size and your must have’s, your designer will want to see detailed measurements (walls, ceilings, doors, appliances). They will also want to know the position of plumbing and electrical.
From there, expect to receive some layout recommendations.

Step 5: Next Steps
Expect some back and forth and questions on the layout. Once this is determined, the next step is to select all your finishes.
