Proper preparation for winter can go a long way towards keeping your yard looking its best year round. It’s also a good opportunity to put away tools that could be damaged by cold or snow and to check your home for any small issues that could become major problems over the winter months.
Things to do
Take a look through this handy checklist to see what tasks should be taken care of in your yard before the snow flies.
-
In order for trees and shrubs to heal properly before winter, they need to be cut or pruned before Labour Day. Use a hand pruner for small twigs which are within reach, and a pole pruner for higher branches. For faster healing, seal the cuts with a wound dressing. Always use eye protection while pruning dead limbs and branches.
-
Use an electric or gas-powered hedge trimmer to level hedge rows. Use shears to shape them and remove excess limbs from evergreens. After cutting, rake the hedge and dispose of or compost the cuttings.
-
Rake or blow leaves from your lawn, bag them and dispose of or compost them.
-
Fall is a very good time to plant new grass seed as it will grow strong roots over the winter. Rake the area to be planted and add top soil. Apply a starter fertilizer as directed by manufacturer. Seed the area as directed and keep it moist.
-
Spread winter fertilizer on existing grass to promote root growth during the winter and help prevent weeds. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions for best results.
-
Drain any water from your garden hose and store it in the basement to prevent cracking. Shut off water valves which supply any external faucets. Drain the outside faucets and replace their washers to prevent leaks and freezing.
-
Clean leaves and debris out of your gutters and make sure that drainage away from house is not obstructed.
