Homeowner Guide : How to Refresh Your Shed
Sheds often get overlooked and end up storing everything from tools to holiday decorations and gardening gear. With just a bit of effort and a few easy upgrades, you can turn your shed into a tidy, organized space you’ll enjoy using.
Whether you’re preparing for another busy gardening season, creating a DIY workshop, or simply looking to improve your backyard, here’s how to give your shed a well-deserved refresh.
Start by Emptying Everything Out
- Start by clearing everything out of your shed. Sort your things into four groups: keep, donate, recycle, and throw away. This is a good chance to get rid of broken tools, empty containers, and anything you haven’t used in a long time.
- Once the shed is empty, sweep the floors, clear out cobwebs, wipe down shelves, and inspect for any signs of moisture, mould, or pests.

Inspect the Structure
- Take a close look at the condition of your shed before making cosmetic improvements. Check for loose siding , damaged trim, cracked windows, soft or rotting wood, and loose fasteners.
- Check the roof for missing shingles, damaged metal panels, or leaks that might let water in.
- Fixing small problems now can save you from bigger, more expensive repairs later.

Give it a Fresh Coat of Paint or Stain
- A new coat of paint or stain is the quickest way to make your shed look better. It also protects the wood from changing weather, especially in Atlantic Canada.
- Before painting or staining:
- Wash the exterior to remove dirt and mildew.
- Scrape away loose paint.
- Sand rough areas.
- Prime bare wood if needed.
- Choose a quality exterior paint or stain designed for your shed’s material.

Upgrade Your Storage
- Keeping your shed organized saves time and makes projects simpler. Put up wall shelves to clear the floor, use pegboards for hand tools, and hang ladders, hoses, cords, and garden tools on hooks.
- Use clear storage bins with labels to easily find seasonal items. Overhead racks work well for lightweight things you don’t use often.

Improve Lighting
- Good lighting makes your shed safer and easier to use. If you don’t have electricity, try battery-powered or rechargeable LED lights. Solar lights are also a great choice for many sheds.
- If your shed has electricity, install bright LED work lights so you can see clearly while you work.

Protect Against Moisture
- Moisture can really damage outdoor sheds. Seal any gaps around doors and windows, add vents for better airflow if needed, and keep your things off the floor with shelves or pallets.
- Check that the ground around your shed slopes away from it so rainwater drains away properly.

Refresh the Outside
- A little landscaping can help your shed fit in with your backyard. Try adding fresh mulch, a stone path, flowers or shrubs around the base, or window boxes for extra charm.
- You might also add outdoor lights to make the shed look finished and add some extra security

Consider New Uses for Your Shed
- After you've refreshed your shed, it can be more than just storage. Depending on its size, you could turn it into:
- A gardening headquarters
- A DIY workshop
- A potting shed
- A bike and sports equipment storage area
- A backyard hobby room or creative space

You don’t need a full renovation to refresh your shed. With some cleaning, a few repairs, new paint, and better organization, you can make it look and
work much better. Spend a weekend on your shed, and you’ll have a space that’s easier to use, better protected, and ready for any project year-round.
