DIY Project: How to Build a Washer Toss Game
Washer toss is an easy-to-build game that’s fun for all ages. With just a few pieces of lumber and basic tools, you can make a sturdy set that will provide years of entertainment.
Materials and Tools You Will Need:
- 4 - 2x4 boards, 8 ft. long
- 2 - 3/4” plywood pieces (24” x 24”)
- 2 - 4” PVC pipe couplers (or 4” diameter pipe cut to 4” tall)
- Wood screws (2-1/2”)
- Wood glue (optional)
- Exterior paint or stain (optional)
- Six large flat washers (3 per team, two different colours)
- Circular or mitre saw
- Drill/driver
- Measuring tape
- Speed square
- Sandpaper or sander
- Paintbrush (optional)
Step 1: Cut the Lumber
- For each box cut:
- Two 24” pieces
- Two 21” pieces
- Place the shorter boards between the longer ones to form a 24-inch square.
Step 2: Build the Frame
- Arrange the boards into a square and use wood screws to hold them together.
- If you want extra strength, you can also use wood glue.
Step 3: Attach the Bottom
- Cut two pieces of 3/4” plywood to 24 x 24”.
- Attach a piece of plywood to the bottom of each frame with screws.
Step 4: Install the Target
- Mark the center of each box and attach a 4-inch PVC coupler or a short piece of 4-inch PVC pipe so it stands upright.
- Secure it in place with construction adhesive or by screwing it in from underneath.
Step 5: Sand and Finish
- Use sandpaper to smooth all the edges.
- Paint, stain, or add a clear finish to protect your game from the weather.
Step 6: Paint the Washers
- Use six large steel washers (2-1/2” outside diameter)
- Paint three washers one colour and the other three a different colour so each team can tell theirs apart.
How to Play
- Set the boxes 10 to 20 feet apart, depending on the players' ages and skill levels.
- Players stand next to one box and toss washers toward the other box.
- Take turns until all the washers have been thrown.
Suggested Scoring
- 5 points - Washer lands inside the PVC cup.
- 3 points - Washer lands inside the box but outside the cup.
- 1 point - Washer lands on top of the box.
- First player or team to reach 21 points wins.
Pro Tip
- Attach rope handles to the sides of the boxes so you can easily carry your washer toss game to camping trips, tailgates, or backyard parties.
