Summer of DIY: DIY Number Sign

Why be like the rest when you can stand out? Modernize your address sign and spruce up the outside of your home. Not sure where to get started to create your one-of-a-kind address sign? Check out these tips and tricks!

1. First, you need to determine the size of the sign you want. In order to do this, you will need to measure the numbers you will be using (leave about one and a half inches in between each number). For reference, this sign is 16 inches wide and 32 inches tall.

2. When you have your sizing, cut your inside pieces at the width you chose - excluding one and a half inches for the pieces that make up the frame (these will be cut later).

Cut your two upright supports and keep in mind if you are putting this in the ground rather than mounting it, you will need 8-10 inches that will be driven into the ground or garden to keep your sign standing.

*TIP: If you do not want to cut your own lumber, our cut shop is here to help. Stop by any KENT location, give our team your preferred measurements, and let us do the cutting for you!

3. Once your pieces are cut, lay the first row of vertical pieces down and screw them into the long height-pieces of your sign (2 screws each). These screws will be hidden by the rest of the vertical pieces to ensure the front of your sign has a screw-free front look.

4. Flip your sign over and screw the remaining pieces on (this will be on the backside).

5. Use a piece of sand paper to lightly sand off any frayed or splintered edges of the wood.

OPTIONAL: Run your sign through a table saw to clean up the edges. Use a straight edge or extra piece of board to keep your pieces lined up instead.

6. Measure from the top of your sign to tthe bottom of the vertical pieces. This will be the lenght of your boarder. Cut TWO of these. Then, measure across the top. This will be the width. Cut ONE of these.

OPTIONAL: You can cut these on 0 or 45 degrees.

0 degrees creates a straight edged frame while 45 degrees creates a picture frame.

9. When your number sign is in place, install a solar spotlight for beautiful nighttime glow!

These number signs are a great way to add curb appeal to any home. You can stain them using SICO exterior stain or even paint them to match your outdoor style.
